WELCOME TO RAPID CITY SOUTH DAKOTA at I90 exits 57, 58, 59, 60 Rapid City is the Western South Dakota shopping, medical, tourism, educational and industrial hub. Located "in the shadow" of the world famous Mt Rushmore, it has been dubbed "gateway to the Black Hills". It is the home of several institutions of higher education including the prestigious engineering university, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Rapid City is a major tourism destination and jumping off point to other tourist sites both near and far. It boasts many museums, parks, hotels, motels and restaurants of a wide range of ethnicity. Its economy in highly impacted by nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base located at Box Elder South Dakota. At 3200 feet above sea level, Rapid City is situated along Rapid Creek, from which it derives its name. It has a population in excess of 60,000 with many more families living in surrounding "bedroom" communities. Rapid City was founded in 1876 following the discovery of gold in the Black Hills. ~
