WELCOME TO WALL SOUTH DAKOTA at I90 exits 109 - 110 Located about 50 mi east of Rapid City and the Black Hills in western South Dakota, population about 800, Wall sits on a grassy mesa at the northern edge of the South Dakota Badlands. HISTORY So it is told - that with the sale of town lots not far behind, Wall, South Dakota began in 1907 as a single sod hut - built near the edge of the eight mile long precipice "the Wall" - that separates the badlands from the grassy plains to the north. From this wall the badlands cascade downward in a beautiful blaze of colorful canyons and ridges. As with many prairie towns, Wall was built adjacent to a coming railroad; in this case the Chicago & Northwestern. All the buildings common to rural communities of the day soon followed: restaurant, store, postoffice, school, blacksmith shop and so on. The town is probably best known for the famous "Wall Drug" built up by the Hustead family using "Free Icewater" signs. "Wall Drug" signs were distributed in an ever widening circle till they made it all over the world. Wall is a vital and growing town and boasts a diverse commercial base. Come visit - Plan to spend several interesting days - take the badlands loop drive - stay in the modern motels - eat great food - relax and enjoy. ~ ~ scroll down to visit our Wall supporters ~ |
