WELCOME TO NEW UNDERWOOD SOUTH DAKOTA at I90 exit 78 Located about 18 mi east of Rapid City and the Black Hills in western South Dakota, population about 600, New Underwood is as modern as tomorrow - with community values of the 1950's. It has an integrated K - 12 school system and a frequently used rodeo arena. THE BEST KEPT SECRET IN WESTERN SOUTH DAKOTA A large number of community facilities are within walking distance of its residents. Its main street has a bank, a post office, city hall, a city park, a community center, an orchid greenhouse, a modern day care center - and night life too. And now: A beautiful, brand new municipal swimming pool! Within a few blocks are: two filling stations, a modern nursing home, convenience store and restaurant, feed store and grain elevator, taxidermy and leather shops - and more. It serves as a business destination and gathering place for ranchers for miles around and as a bedroom community for nearby Rapid City.SOME HISTORY Around 1905 an old boxcar became the first post office when the Chicago Northwestern Railroad Company began serving the area. It was dubbed "Underwood" after John Underwood, an area sheep rancher. To avoid confusion with other communities similarly named, the town underwent several name changes - New Underwood has finally become the community's permanent name.The residents of New Underwood extend a warm invitation to you to visit their thriving community. ~
